A while back I was in the emergency room with kidney stones. That morning is pretty hazy. I basically remember intense mind boggling pain, begging for pain meds, then smiling a lot after receiving them. My husband recently reminded me that I brought up gun control and school safety. I also told the radiologist that she was doing a great job and that I appreciated her aura. For those of you that don't know me, aura is not a word I use frequently.
This story is relevant because yesterday I went in for my pre-op and the doctor informs me that I'm mildly anemic based on my test results from the emergency room. The ER visit was WEEKS ago, which frustrated me because no one told me! I could have been taking iron supplements and loading up on an iron-rich diet. I was worried this might delay my surgery so I emailed my surgeon and she said she reviewed my test results and doesn't think it'll be a problem. So phew, we're still on schedule. As a result of a few of the health problems I've been having the last few years, I've decided to try and make some changes to my life:
-Regular exercise, even if its just walking the dog a little longer
-eat more iron rich food (spinach in EVERYTHING including my morning smoothies)
-eat as much organic food as I can
-eat more grass fed organic red meat
-drink more water
-drink less soda
-eat more veggies
Thats pretty much it. I'm not going to restrict myself at this point. I think if I focus on adding more healthy things to my diet, I'll naturally eat less of the junk I'm not supposed to eat.
Also, I've gotten involved with the org Bright Pink. If you don't know about it, I highly recommend you check out their page: http://www.brightpink.org/
They're one of the few organizations that are raising awareness on breast and ovarian cancer prevention and detection in young women. It's very near and dear to my heart. So much so that I've decided to be part of their San Francisco chapter. Next week I'll be hosting a meet & greet happy hour in SF for other BRCA positive women. I'm so excited! Hopefully I remember to bring my camera so I can take some pictures and post them.
